Oakfuskee Conservation Center represents an ongoing commitment to responsible architecture. Using materials such as recycled steel and reclaimed wood, our dedication to sustainability is also complemented by the integration of low-flow plumbing fixtures, energy-efficient lighting, cisterns, rain chains and so much more. We envisioned Oakfuskee to be an eco-friendly haven that will stand the test of time while minimizing environmental impact for generations to come.
Founded in 1994, Chattahoochee Riverkeeper (CRK), now housed at Oakfuskee Conservation Center, champions the protection and preservation of the Chattahoochee River, its lakes, and the surrounding watershed. They engage in water monitoring, education, research, advocacy, collaboration, and legal action. Over the years, their impact has flourished, boasting a membership of 10,000 throughout the watershed, earning a prestigious 4-star rating from Charity Navigator for 11 consecutive years, and ranking as the 11th licensed program among the 350 in the global Waterkeeper Alliance.
Chattahoochee Riverkeeper also offers a unique environmental education experience through their floating classroom at West Point Lake. They have collectively enriched the minds of more than 100,000 students, teachers, and adults with distinctive and impactful learning opportunities.
The floating classroom provides a dynamic platform for water-based learning, integrating hands-on activities that align with STEM subjects and adhere to age-appropriate Georgia Standards for Excellence and the Alabama Learning Exchange. Students partake in a comprehensive curriculum, covering water quality testing, identification of freshwater plankton and wildlife, understanding the journey of lake water from source to faucet, and discovering actionable ways to safeguard these invaluable water resources.
